A Hike Through the Schwanheim Dunes

September 29, 2021

My next day in Frankfurt included a nature walk through the Schwanheimer Dünen area in the far west of the city. I took the train to Höchst a small neighborhood across the river from it and walked the rest of the way.

On my way, I went through the older part of Höchst, and walked down another tiny cute street.

At the end of the street I found the Altes Schloss, or old castle. You could walk around it and through the gardens below it.

It had the coolest shutters.

The nature reserve was a series of trails through the area, used for walking, running, and biking by the locals. Part of it had boardwalks.

There was a varied landscape around, from little lakes to open fields to oak forests. All very pretty. The interpretive signs mentioned sand dunes, but I didn't see anything recognizable as one.

After I finished the hiking loop, I tried to visit Weisbaden, a pretty town a little farther northwest of where I was, but train schedules and construction conspired against me, so I gave up and maybe I'll get to it later.

Dinner that night was my first time trying schnitzel, and I'm a fan. Take pork, pound it flat, bread and fry it. Can't go wrong. It was served with Germany's famous grünesosse, green sauce, which as far as I could tell was tartar sauce with a bunch of green herbs in it.

For dessert I had rote grütze, a kind of red jellied berry dish with ice cream that was on my list and I didn't regret.

And we also shared a flight of apfelwine, a type of local apple cider. It was delicious, and we all enjoyed the evening.
